Portage County

Book Description:

Early days in Portage County, WI, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales, historic data and individual biographies in this New 41 page 8 1/2" x 11" spiral-bound booklet, printed single-sided on 60 # opaque paper. The front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. The information comes from a rare 1881 book, entitled History of Northern Wisconsin. Communities currently listed for this area by the National Association of Counties include: Alban, Almond, Amherst, Amherst Junction, Bancroft, Belmont, Buena Vista, Carson, Custer, Dewey, Eau Pleine, Grant, Hull, Junction City, Lanark, Linwood, Milladore (part), Nelsonville, New Hope, Park Ridge, Pine Grove, Plover, Rosholt, Sharon, Stevens Point (County Seat), Stockton, Whiting. (Some towns may not be mentioned in the booklet.) Among the many subjects included are: Location, Physical Features, Natural Resources, Climate, and Railroads; Indian agents John Bowyer and Samuel C. Stambaugh; Unfair attempts to secure Indian lands; several Indian biographies; Early lumbering operations; narration of an early settler, S.A. Sherman; the Importance of the White Pine; Political History and names of "principal persons" in 1842; first county officials; Population and other statistics; the Civil War period -- the Pinery Rifles, Pinery Boys, Evergreens, Lyons Pinery Battery, Pinery Stars, etc.; the county seat, Stevens Point, including a drawing of the town; Early businesses, factories, saw-mills, hotels, fire department, etc.; churches, Newspapers; Societies; Professions; Miscellaneous items of historical interest, including the lynching of the Cartwright brothers; Portage's first county seat, Plover; other villages; and other interesting bits of history and trivia.
