Clark County

Book Description:

Early days in Clark County, WI, are recalled through in this NEW 29 page booklet, filled with local history and biographies of prominent residents. The information comes from a rare 1881 book, entitled History of Northern Wisconsin. The booklet is printed single-sided on 60 pound 8 1/2" x 11" opaque paper. The front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. We've enlarged the Clark County area of a map from the original book, and included it along with two other maps of historic interest. Communities currently listed for this area by the National Association of Counties include: Abbotsford (part), Beaver, Butler, Chili, Colby (part), Curtiss, Dewhurst, Dorchester (part), Eaton, Foster, Fremont, Grant, Granton, Green Grove, Greenwood, Hendren, Hewett, Hixon, Hoard, Humbird, Levis, Longwood, Loyal, Lynn, Mayville, Mead, Mentor, Neillsville (County Seat), Owen, Pine Valley, Reseburg,Seif, Sherman, Sherwood, Thorp, Unity (part), Warner, Washburn, Weston, Willard, Withee, Worden, and York. (Some towns may not be mentioned in the booklet.) Among the many subjects included are: Location and Natural Resources, like the Black River; Mormons and Pine Trees; the Enterprising arrivals of 1846; the Courtship and Wedding of James O'Neill and Jane Douglass and other "social" events; Disaster of 1847 and the Panic of 1857; early murders and rough characters; New arrivals -- year by year; First County officers; County Seat Dispute between Weston and Neillsville; County courthouse, jail and poor-house; Newspapers; Pineries and Logging; Neillsville and Clark County during the Civil War; Post War Improvements; Schools; Churches; Neillsville and Merrillon Railroad; Secret Societies; the Sherman Guards; Neillsville Manufacturers, including the Neillsville Flour Mills, Neillsville Brewery, Sterns Stair Factory, Leason Pump Factory, the Neillsville Foundry and Machine Shop, etc.; Humbird Smallpox Epidemic; Greenwood "firsts"; the dam at Hemlock; Colby and Dorchester, on the Wisconsin Central RR; a "live" newspaper in Colby ; and other interesting bits of history and trivia. Attention Genealogists: This booklet contains biographies of many county residents of the late 1800s. Some of these are brief, but others include family members, affiliations, war records, and business activities, in the course of which they often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on news events.
