Early days in Marshall County in Middle Tennessee are recalled in this spiral bound booklet compiled from excerpts from: History of Tennessee, originally published in 1886 by Goodspeed Publishing Co., Counties of Tennessee by Austin P. Foster (1923), and Tennessee, a Guide to the State, a 1939 Federal Writer's Project of the WPA. The new 70-page booklet is printed on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Among the subjects included are: Geography, including its soil, timber, and the principal waterways; early settlers north of Duck River, between Duck River and Elk Ridge, and south of Elk Ridge; Mound Builders evidences; establishment of the county; county buildings and county officials; roads; the county agricultural society and medical society; various courts, murder cases and other trials and punishments, various juries; attorneys; railroads; the War with Mexico with names of some participants; Support for the South in the Civil War; the 17th Regiment and other units with Marshall County men; Businesses in the county; Churches and clergymen; the towns of Lewisburg, Cornersville, Chapel Hill (birthplace of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest), Farmington, Verona, Belfast, Caney Spring, Holt's Corner, Spring Place, South Berlin, Mooresville, and others; the Lewisburg Male Academy and other schools; and other items of interest. Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are a number of biographies. Most are fairly lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities.
