Cheatham County

Book Description:

Early days in Cheatham County in Middle Tennessee are recalled in this spiral bound booklet compiled from excerpts from: History of Tennessee, originally published in 1886 by Goodspeed Publishing Co., and Counties of Tennessee by Austin P. Foster (1923). The new 65-page booklet is printed on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Among the subjects included are: Geography; Outmoded Agriculture Practices; Early Settlers; Indian Relics; Early Mills; How the county was established and its boundaries; County buildings; County officials; Judges and Justices of the Peace, Grand Jurors, Lawyers, Court cases, several coming out of activities relating to the Civil War; Civil War with names of officers and casualties; Businesses, lodges, newspapers and doctors; Ashland, the county seat, and other communities -- Sycamore Mills, Pleasant View, and Kingston Springs; Ashland Institute, Pleasant View High School and other schools; Churches; and other items. Early schools were primative. One of the "more modern...had a floor in it under which the hogs slep...and produced...fleas for the amusement of the pupils." Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are a number of biographies.
