Early days in Davie and Yadkin Counties in North Carolina are recalled in this new 49-page spiral-bound booklet, comprised of excerpts from several vintage books. These source materials include John Hill Wheeler's Historical Sketches of North Carolina (1851); Sketches of Prominent Living North Carolinians by Jerome Dowd (1888), North Carolina, A Guide to the Old North State (1939), a product of the WPA; A New Geography of North Carolina (1954-65). The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed single-sided on 60# opaque paper, with the print enlarged to fit the 8.5" x 11" paper and improve readability. Places mentioned in the booklet include: Davie -- Mocksville (county seat), Advance, Cooleemee, Farmington, Cana, Davie X Roads, Calahan Mountain and Clarksville; Yadkin -- Yadkinville (county seat), Arlington, Boonville, Brooks Cross Roads, Center, East Bend, Hamptonville, Huntsville, and Jonesville. Among the many subjects included are: Physical features, including the; Members of the General Assembly before 1851; Parents of Daniel Boone; a personal duel for independance; Rowan Helper, prophetic author of The Impending Crisis, a book that was banned in the south; George Wesley Johnson, Mrs. Queen Bess Kennan, Alexander Martin Hanes, the Clements family, Tyre Glenn family, the Col. Joseph Williams family, W.E. Rutledge, publisher of The Yadkin Ripple, the Holcomb cousins, J.H. Craver and Son, N. Glenn Williams and "Old Nick" corn liquor; transportation troubles and the end of a dream; the Civil War; agriculture and industry; Cooleemee plantation; Indian uprisings in the Revolutionary War in Yadkin; the old and the new courthouses in Yadkinville; Tobacco manufacturing in Yadkinville; 'a suit, a Bible and $6.00', gabbro diorite, tobacco baskets, 'Red Strings' baseball team, a reluctant executioner, and many other fascinating bits of history and trivia. The Dowd excerpts are biographies of Richmond Pearson of Asheville, a native of Richmond Hill, and the Rev. W.M. Robey. The WPA excerpt offers a nostalgic glimpse of the area from a 1939 vantage point, offering historical notes and sightseeing possibilities.
