Ontonagon County

Book Description:

Early days in Ontonagon County, MI, which until 1881 encompassed Gogebic County, are recalled in this new 48-page booklet titled: Ontonagon County, Michigan, USA The spiral-bound booklet includes excerpts from two hard to find sources: the 1883 History of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Michigan, a Guide to the Wolverine State, a 1941 product of the WPA Writer's Program. The tri-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 8.5" x 11" 60# opaque paper. Among the many subjects included are: Topographical and Physical features, Native Americans, Pioneers and famous "firsts", the Copper Manitou, United States Land Entries, County Organization and Institutions, Political record, Financial Review, Road and Water Ways, Agricultural Interests, the Press, War Record, Human Fatalities, Silver and Copper Mines and Miners, Township Organization, the village of Ontonagon -- Religious Societies, Benevolent Societies, Hotels, Fire Dept., the Harbor, Commercial Statistics, Lumber Interests, etc. --, Rockland Township, Greenland Twp., Carp Lake Twp., and other interesting bits of history and trivia. In addition to the many names mentioned throughout the booklet, there are a number of biographies. These often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on the events of the day. The names include: Frederick E. Adams, Henry Apel, Capt. Daniel Beaser, Charles F. Button, Capt. Henry Buzzo, James M. Buzzo, Stephen H. Chamberlin, Joseph Coulter, William Coulter, Joshua W. Crozer, Patrick J. Cusick, Theobald Dreiss, Thomas Emmons, John Greenfield, William A.
