Crawford County

Book Description:

Early days in Crawford County, IN, are recalled in this booklet of excerpts from the rare 1889 book: Biographical and Historical Souvenir for the Counties of Clark, Crawford, Harrison, Floyd, Jefferson, Jennings, Scott and Washington. An excerpt from Indiana, a Guide to the Hoosier State, a 1941 product of the WPA, is also included. The 52-page spiral bound book is 8 1/2 x 11 1/2" and is printed on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet protects the front cover. Separate booklets for Clark, Harrison, Floyd, Jefferson, Jennings, Scott and Washington counties are also available. Some of the topics in the history section are: Location on the Ohio River; Numerous caves: Rock House, Indian's, Miller's, Wyandotte, New, and Marengo, discovered in 1883; Agriculture; Settlers and their early sports, entertainments, etc.; Oldest residents -- John Landiss, Nathaniel Straughn, Mrs. Nancy Clark, Robert Sharp, etc.; County clerks; Churches; Early court cases -- the first resulted in a fine of $1.50; the execution of "Ooley" for the murder of "Briley,"; first marriage; Towns -- Leavenworth (county seat, at the time the source book was written), Fredonia, Indian Hollow, Marengo, Milltown, English (present county seat), Eckerty, Grantsburgh, and Alton; and other bits of history and trivia. This booklet is a goldmine of information for genealogy seekers, often giving the names of parents, spouse, in-laws, children, siblings, etc., as well as military service, politics, residence, occupation, and more. The bios include both early settlers and residents of the county in the 1880's: Dr. George W. Baylor, John Benz, Dr. William C. Bird, James Bobbett, Charles A.A. Bullington, Dr. William A. Cole, Robert Marion Graig, Charles H. Crecilius, William R. Dunn, William Everdon, Jacob Funkhouser, Dr. John H. Gibbs, Henry C. Green, Dr. Emanuel R. Hawn, Capt. Elijah P.E.
