New 137 Page Booklet. Early days in Henry County, Indiana -- which encompasses the past and/or present communities of: Ashton, Blountsville, Cadiz, Dunreith, Greensboro, Hillsboro, Honey Creek, Kennard, Knightstown, Lewisville (Louisville), Mechanicsburg, Messick, Middletown, Millville, Mooreland, Mount Summit, New Castle, New Lisbon, Ogden, Pierson Station, Raysville, Rogersville, Shirley (part), Spiceland, Springport, Straughn, Sulphur Springs and Woodville -- are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this newly printed excerpt from an 1884 book. The original book, "History of Henry County, Indiana, and also a Condensed History of Indiana," was produced in Chicago by Inter-state Publishing Co. It was apparently compiled by a number of people, as no author's name is given. The 8 1/2 x 11" spiral-bound booklet is printed double-sided on 60# paper, with the 3-color front cover protected with a vinyl sheet. Chapter titles include: Civil History -- choice of county seat, first election and officers, first courts, the early county buildings, other public buildings; Henry County in the Rebellion (Civil War) -- with various regiments, officers and troup movements; Schools -- Early facilities, Henry County Seminary, New Castle and Knightstown Public Schools, Spiceland Academy; the Bar of Henry County, with names of members up to 1883; the Press of Henry County; County Societies -- Medical Society (many names), Psysio-Medical System, Bible Society, Agricultural Society, Union Agricultural Assn.; Internal Improvements -- Early Roads and Turnpikes and Railroad; Reminiscences -- Temperance, Views on Slavery Question, Natural Disasters; War of 1812, Presidential Vsits; and the Eminent Dead. Here are names of some of the most prominent early Henry County citizens in the booklet: Asahel Woodward, Jesse H.
