Early days in Hamilton County, IL, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales, factual data and personal biographies in this brand new spiral-bound booklet. The booklet is an excerpt from the hard-to-find 1887 book, History of Gallatin, Saline, Hamilton, Franklin and Williamson Counties, Illinois published by Goodspeed Publishing Co. of Chicago. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Gallatin, Saline, Franklin and Williamson Counties booklets are also available. The booklet, printed on 60# opaque paper, contains 89 pages. However, because we use a 2-up format on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, it has the equivalent of over 170 pages from the original book. Among the many subjects discussed are: Physical Features; an extentive list of early settlers; Tales of Indians; a list of land entries made prior to Feb. 8, 1821; Organization of the county and names of officials; Military history with names of many participants -- Black Hawk War, Mexican War, and the Civil War; Courts and court cases, including several murder cases; Settling disputes by "fighting exercises" in a "stray pen; McLeansboro -- the first house, businesses, societies with names of officers, newspapers, city officials; Dahloren, Thackeray, Logansport, and other towns; Agricultural board; Schools, including Hamilton College and Teachers institutes; Churches; and other bits of history and trivia. Attention Genealogists: This booklet contains biographies of many county residents of yesteryear. Some are brief, but others include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities, in the course of which they often shed light on the businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on the events of the day.
